Rethymno – A City Shaped by Centuries.
Situated on the northern coast of Crete, Rethymno is a place where the island's long history can still be felt in everyday life. The city grew significantly during the Venetian period, when it became an important port and cultural center between Chania and Heraklion.
Later, during the centuries of Ottoman rule, new architectural and cultural elements were added to the city. Today, walking through Rethymno you can easily notice this mix of influences, from Venetian buildings and fortifications to Ottoman mosques and fountains, all blending with the lively rhythm of a modern Cretan town.
The Old Town
The Old Town of Rethymno is one of the most charming and well-preserved historic areas in Greece. Much of what visitors see today dates back to the Venetian era, when merchants and nobles built elegant houses and public buildings that still stand along the narrow streets.
As you explore the area, you will also notice traces of the Ottoman period, including mosques, arches, and decorative fountains. One of the best known landmarks is the beautiful Rimondi Fountain, built in 1626, which still stands in the heart of the old town square and remains a popular meeting point for locals and visitors.
The Fortezza Castle
Overlooking the city from a hilltop stands the impressive Fortezza of Rethymno, one of the largest Venetian fortresses in Crete. Built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirate attacks and Ottoman invasions, the fortress offers sweeping views over the Old Town and the sea.
Inside its walls, visitors can explore historic structures, open courtyards, and the remains of old churches and mosques, experiencing a powerful reminder of the island's strategic and cultural importance.
The Beach
Stretching for kilometers along the coastline, the beach of Rethymno is one of the longest sandy beaches on Crete. Just steps from the city center, its golden sand and clear blue waters provide the perfect setting for relaxation, swimming, and seaside walks.
Beach cafe's, sunbeds, and waterfront restaurants create a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of the Cretan coast throughout the day.
